Casa Henriquina stands in the center of the village of Aguieira, in the municipality of Nelas, right in front of the pillory. It is integrated into an urban fabric of two-story houses, with a yard to the north and a street to the west.
This position, next to the town's main square, allows for a deep immersion into the traditional atmosphere of the village, offering a vantage point over the square and the historic houses that surround it.
With a longitudinal plan and an imposing stone façade, Casa Henriquina possibly dates back to the 15th century, a date supported by the epigraphic inscription of 1451 visible on the right jamb of the main door. Popular tradition links it to Infante D. Henrique (Prince Henry the Navigator), a prominent figure in Portuguese history, and it is said to have later served as the seat of the municipal government.
Classified as a Property of Municipal Interest in 2000 (by Order of the Secretary of State for Culture No. 232/2000, of May 22), its original design shows the noble residential use with which it was associated. Currently, it is in a state of ruin, which has led to the disappearance of the roof and the upper part of the walls. Inside, vegetation has invaded the rooms, testifying to the neglect that has marked the last decades of its history.
The simplicity of its plain masonry box contrasts with the chamfered frame of one of the openings on the east side and with the projecting staircase landing on the west side, which leads to a small balcony. The rectangular openings maintain the clear reading of a composition that shows Renaissance influences, even in its current state.
The fragmented appearance of the building, with its truncated walls and blind windows, creates a peculiar and contemplative atmosphere. The proximity to the neighboring buildings, which adjoin it to the south and east, reinforces the feeling of an old urban estate, making the visiting experience a direct contact with the multiple historical layers that make up the identity of Aguieira.
