The Chapel of Solar do Vinho do Dão, also historically known as Santa Marta Chapel, is integrated into the Solar do Vinho do Dão complex, in Urbanização do Fontelo, in the city of Viseu. It is located in a spacious and wooded area, providing a serene and tranquil environment for its visitors.

The Solar is situated near the Pavia river, and its landscape setting is marked by the presence of landscaped areas that complement the experience of those visiting this place.

History and Architecture

The history of the Chapel of Solar do Vinho do Dão is rich and dates back to the 15th century, with its initial construction in 1426, during the time of Bishop D. Garcia. However, it was in the 16th century that this chapel gained its most distinctive features, under the guidance of Bishop D. Miguel da Silva.

During this period, an Italian architect, Francesco Cremona, was responsible for its remodeling, giving it a striking Renaissance style. This style is particularly noticeable in its dome-shaped roof and the granite details that adorn the structure. Subsequently, between 1610 and 1625, Bishop D. João Manuel undertook the rebuilding of the chapel, enhancing its form and surrounding areas.

Artistic Heritage

The Chapel of Santa Marta, by which it was originally known, had a notable connection with Portuguese sacred art. It was in this space that, in times, an important work by the painter Vasco Fernandes, one of the masters of the Portuguese Renaissance, was exhibited. The altarpiece titled "Christ in the House of Martha" was an integral part of his artistic collection.

Although the altarpiece is currently housed in the Grão Vasco Museum, the memory of its presence in this chapel highlights its importance as a center of devotion and artistic expression throughout the centuries, contributing to its cultural relevance.
