The Chapel of the Martyr Saint Sebastian is located in the São Sebastião urbanization, in the peaceful village of Medelo, part of the municipality of Lamego. Erected on top of a small wooded hill, the chapel enjoys an isolated and elevated position. Its churchyard, which surrounds the building, is walled and features a natural slope, culminating at the back of the chapel in a higher area that serves as a viewpoint over the surrounding landscape.
This example of religious architecture, dating back to the 16th century, features a single nave. Its facade is characterized by an elevated porch, accessible by a wide stone staircase. This porch is supported by engaged columns with Corinthian capitals and geometric elements, lending it a distinctive aesthetic. The roofs of the nave and the porch are distinguished by two and three pitches, respectively. The main portal, a chamfered full arch, stands out for its raised rectangular cartouche displaying the coat of arms of Bishop D. Rodrigo Pereira, a figure associated with its probable construction.
The interior of the chapel, with its exposed granite masonry walls, reveals an atmosphere of simplicity and authenticity. The altar, set on a predella, has an antependium enriched with patterned tiles in shades of white, blue, and yellow. In the center of the back wall, a niche houses the image of the Martyr Saint Sebastian, flanked by corbels with torch-bearing angels. The space is further adorned by two raised polychrome panels, depicting the Holy Evangelists. The ceiling, plastered and smooth in a depressed arch, completes the interior ambiance, bearing witness to the interventions that, over the centuries, sought to preserve its essence.
