The Chapel of Touro is serenely integrated into the small village of Touro, belonging to the municipality of Vila Nova de Paiva. It is situated in a setting that reflects the tranquility and rural landscape of Portugal's interior. Its presence stands out in the local environment, inviting a pause and observation of its unique profile.
This contemporary temple, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, was born from the deep will and generosity of the Touro community. Its construction symbolizes the unity and faith of the local inhabitants, who wished to build a space for worship and gathering, conceived to be a welcoming "home" and open to all who wish to visit it in the village.
The chapel distinguishes itself by its monolithic form in exposed concrete, departing from more traditional conceptions to adopt a more contemporary and impactful aesthetic. The project, authored by designer José Morgado, who lives and works in the village itself, explores stereotomy to create a volumetric form that, although abstract, aims to be a landmark in the local landscape, departing from the conventional "house" shape.
Inside the Chapel of Touro, the experience is shaped by the integration of essential natural elements: light, water, and earth. A beam of light plays a central role in the conception of the space, emerging as a symbol of elevation and spirituality. This interplay of light, which illuminates the environment in a simple and direct way, invites introspection and confers an atmosphere of serenity and contemplation.
