The Chapel of Tojosa stands in the centre of Tojosa village, in the municipality of Tondela, on a small churchyard paved with rustic cobblestones. Surrounding it are traditional-style houses and well-trimmed box hedges, creating an atmosphere of calm and order.
The building is located next to a low-traffic local road, which winds through vineyards and chestnut groves, allowing one to enjoy the birdsong and the soft light typical of the Dão-Lafões region.
Although there is no certainty about its exact construction date, the Chapel of Tojosa probably dates back to the late 19th century. It has always been a meeting point for the community during local religious festivities and remains a living testament to popular devotion in this region.
The walls covered in white stucco and the granite corners preserve its vernacular design, the result of successive restorations that respected its original simplicity and authenticity.
The facade features sober lines, with the stone bell tower prominently placed above the ceramic tile eaves, topped by a granite cross. The wooden door, crafted in panels, contrasts with the white masonry and invites entry.
Inside, the space remains modest: a simple altar in light-toned painted carving, devotional images, and a hydraulic tile floor that adds a touch of color to the ensemble.
To the west, the gaze reaches gentle hills covered with cork oaks and vineyards that fade into the horizon. At dusk, the golden light highlights the warm hue of the tiles and the immaculate white of the walls.
Next to the churchyard, a small garden with boxwood and aromatic herbs provides a welcoming space for those who wish to remain in contemplation, absorbing the silence and pure air of this rural area.
