The Chapel of Saint Sebastian is located in São Pedro do Sul, more specifically integrated into the Bairro da Ponte (Bridge Neighborhood). This urban area allows visitors to observe the daily life of the community and the context in which this small, yet significant, religious building is situated.
The history of the Chapel of Saint Sebastian dates back to the late 17th century. Its construction was formalized in 1694 through a contract established between the stewards of the local confraternity and the stonemason Anrique Rodrigues, originally from Ferreira, in the municipality of Coura. This document not only marked the beginning of its construction but also detailed its initial purposes, establishing the chapel as a space of faith and unity for the community.
Built with an entirely religious purpose, the Chapel of Saint Sebastian stands out for its architectural simplicity, characteristic of devotional constructions of the era. One of the notable aspects of its design was the inclusion of a collateral altar, designed with an arch corresponding to the triumphal arch. This feature was specifically conceived to accommodate the image of Christ, which was previously located in the Calvary, ensuring it a prominent place of veneration inside the temple. The chapel remains, to this day, an active place of worship and devotion.
