The Old Church of Santa Maria is located in the peaceful hamlet of Casal do Rei, a part of the locality of Canas de Santa Maria, in the municipality of Tondela. The surrounding environment is serene, reflecting the characteristic rural landscape of the region. Its presence discreetly stands out in this setting, inviting calm and attentive observation.
The history of the Old Church of Santa Maria dates back to the 12th century, with references pointing to a decision by Queen D. Mafalda, wife of D. Afonso Henriques, in its foundation. Despite this ancient provenance, the most visible and oldest material elements that survive on site, namely its front facade, exhibit characteristics that suggest a later period, possibly the 14th century, with notable similarities to other constructions in the region.
Currently, what remains of the original temple is its distinctive granite facade. This features a remarkable portal, characterized by an elegant ogival arch, which rises above the main entrance. The most striking element is the bell-gable, which stands above the front facade, displaying two pointed arch openings, lending a unique and easily recognizable silhouette to the monument.
Over the centuries, the building faced the wear of time. Between 1968 and 1974, restoration works were carried out; however, its advanced state of degradation led to the decision to demolish the church's nave. Thus, what remains today is its original front facade, serving as an enduring testament to its long existence and its historical importance to the community of Canas de Santa Maria.
