District: Viseu > Viseu > Viseu > Bairro Dona Maria do Céu Mendes
Although the Pillory of Barreiros no longer physically stands on site, its name remains linked to an area of historical significance in the city of Viseu. It was located in the territory that was once the old municipal seat of Barreiro, today encompassed within the parish of Vildemoinhos. The Bairro Dona Maria do Céu Mendes (Dona Maria do Céu Mendes Neighborhood) is situated within this same area of the municipality of Viseu, marking its historical location within the urban fabric.
Pillories were, in medieval and modern times, symbolic landmarks of great importance. They represented the judicial and administrative authority of a municipality, marking the place where sentences were carried out and edicts were promulgated. Thus, they were the center of civic life and local justice, expressing municipal autonomy and the power of the people and their representatives before the crown.
Although the Pillory of Barreiros was demolished, its historical and cultural importance is undeniable. This element of jurisdictional architecture was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1933, a recognition that underlines its patrimonial value, even in its physical absence. This classification highlights the relevance of the pillory as a testament to a period when Barreiro (today Vildemoinhos) served as the municipal seat, with its own jurisdiction and capacity for the administration of justice. Its memory thus recalls a fundamental chapter in the administrative and social history of the Viseu region.
