The Pillory of Alva is situated in the Fundo de Vila area, within the picturesque town of Alva, in the municipality of Castro Daire. It is specifically located in Largo da Fonte, a square that evokes the old pulse of the village and invites a quiet observation of local daily life.
This monument has a peculiar and remarkable history. Although it disappeared in the mid-20th century, around 1961, it is believed that part of its original structure was incorporated into the foundations of a village building. Its classification as a Property of Public Interest, since 1933, underscores its heritage significance.
Today, the Pillory of Alva has been carefully reconstructed, offering visitors the opportunity to contemplate a replica of this historic landmark. This recreation is a vivid tribute to the town's memory and its importance in the municipality's historical journey.
Pillories in Portugal were unmistakable landmarks that symbolized municipal autonomy and the administration of local justice. The existence of the Pillory of Alva is intrinsically linked to the granting of a charter (foral) to the town.
Alva received an ancient charter, originally granted by King Afonso Henriques and later confirmed by King Afonso III. This privilege was renewed by King Manuel I on February 10, 1514. The pillory was, thus, the physical representation of royal authority and the jurisdiction held by the locality, constituting a central element in the civic and administrative life of the settlement in medieval and modern times.
