The Arco Bridge, also known as Barrela Bridge, is located in the parish of Barrela, in the municipality of Vila Pouca de Aguiar, district of Vila Real. This historic crossing stands over the Aguiar River, set within a landscape of predominantly rural and isolated characteristics.

Situated on the route of an ancient path that once linked Vreia de Jales to Pinhão Cele, the bridge is integrated into the natural environment. Its surroundings, punctuated by dense vegetation, highlight the presence of a place that maintains a deep connection with the region's natural landscape.

Testament to the Past

The origin of the Barrela Bridge dates back to the Roman era, the period when its initial structure is presumed to have been built. Over the centuries, this fundamental communication route underwent various interventions and renovations, notably during the medieval period and the modern era.

Its architectural evolution over time reflects the construction techniques of distinct eras, making the bridge a valuable testament to its continued importance for communities. Its historical and heritage relevance is formally recognized by its classification as a Monument of Public Interest.

Architectural Features

Built mostly from granite stone, the Arco Bridge is distinguished by the solidity of its construction and the clarity of its engineering. It features a flat deck, approximately four meters wide, resting on a single perfect arch, whose voussoirs are characterized by being remarkably narrow and long.

It is possible to observe the different phases of construction and repair that the bridge has experienced: the lower part reveals more regular stonework, while the upper courses display more heterogeneous masonry. The granite slab pavement and the ashlar parapets complete the traditional image of the bridge.
