The Museum of Geology is located within the facilities of the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), in the city of Vila Real. It is situated in the Bairro da Eira area, integrated into the university campus. This environment is distinguished by its ample green spaces and the unique atmosphere of an educational institution.
This space dedicated to Earth Sciences was inaugurated in 1986. Its creation was due to the vision of Professor Doctor Fernando Real, a prominent figure in the field of geology and in the history of the university. In recognition of his importance, the museum now bears his name, being designated the Fernando Real Museum of Geology.
One of the museum's main objectives is to share knowledge about geology with the community. It seeks to be a place where visitors of all ages can find answers to their curiosities about the planet and awaken a greater interest in the Earth's riches and processes.
At the museum, it is possible to observe a diversity of collections that bring together minerals, rocks, and fossils. The permanent exhibition area displays specimens collected from various parts of the globe, offering a comprehensive overview of worldwide geodiversity.
One of the collection's highlights is the samples of minerals and ores from Portugal's main historical mines. This collection constitutes a valuable testament to the country's geological richness. In addition to the main exhibition, the museum also has a room dedicated to temporary displays, presenting other themes or relevant pieces over time.
Beyond the indoor space, the museum extends the experience outdoors with its Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro Geological Garden project. This garden, located on the UTAD EcoCampus, provides a set of stations where visitors can directly observe and understand geological aspects characteristic of the region.
It serves as an invitation to explore local geology outdoors, complementing the visit to the indoor collections and offering a different perspective on the surrounding landscape.
