Located in the town of Telões, municipality of Vila Pouca de Aguiar, the Solar of the Caiado Ferrão family stands as a remarkable testament to local history and architecture. It is situated in a peri-urban, isolated area, with its main facade facing a sloping street. To the north, a vast courtyard and cultivated land, with fruit trees and vineyards, extend, and to the west, a walled courtyard.
The Solar of the Caiado Ferrão family, an imposing noble house, presents a fascinating blend of architectural styles, reflecting its evolution throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. Built predominantly with shale and granite masonry, its oldest part, dating from the second half of the 17th century, exhibits simpler lines and unornamented rectangular windows. The 18th-century additions, however, introduce the vibrant Baroque style, visible in the windows framed with lowered arches and decorated with motifs such as garlands, cartouches, florets, and volutes. This building served, for centuries, as the residence of the noble Caiado Ferrão family.
Attached to the solar, the chapel constitutes one of the main points of interest. Its Baroque-style facade is crowned by a curvilinear pediment bearing a coat of arms, while the windows display decorations of garlands and volutes. A tombstone in the chapel indicates that its construction, dating from 1771, was an initiative of Francisco Xavier d'Almeida Caiado de Melo e Vasconcelos.
Inside, the chapel reveals a single nave and a high choir. The highlight is the Rococo altarpiece, with polychrome and gilded carving, richly decorated with stylized volutes and auricular elements, which frames a painting of Our Lady of Conception. The walls are adorned with mural paintings, by the Italian painter Pascoal José Parente, which create the illusion of perspectival architectures and represent the Four Virtues, adding unique artistic value to the space.
The Solar of the Caiado Ferrão family and its chapel have been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1970, a recognition of their historical and artistic relevance. This classification, complemented by a Special Protection Zone, ensures the safeguarding of a heritage that, in the mid-20th century, was at risk of having its contents dispersed. Its preservation is fundamental for understanding the stately architecture and Baroque sacred art in the region, keeping alive a significant part of Portugal's cultural heritage.
