The Pelourinho of Vila Real stands in the heart of the city, in Largo do Pelourinho. This square, paved with Portuguese cobblestones in circular patterns, offers an isolated and tranquil urban setting. It is an accessible location in the historic center, surrounded by public roads, allowing for a relaxed observation of the structure and its surroundings.
This granite monument dates back to 1515, the year Vila Real received a new royal charter from D. Manuel I, a document that granted significant autonomies. Originally, the pelourinho was a visible symbol of municipal power and justice, serving as a place for the application of public punishments. Over the centuries, its location within the town was altered several times, reflecting the evolution of the urban space. Today, although its original function has ceased, it is an important cultural and patrimonial landmark of the city, classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1933.
The structure of the Pelourinho of Vila Real is notable for its granite ashlar construction. It begins with a base of four octagonal steps, upon which an octagonal shaft also rises. In the lower third of the shaft, an orifice can be observed that, in times past, served to attach the irons of subjection. At the top, an elaborate cage-shaped structure stands out, with four faces opening into round arches supported by small columns. This "cage" is crowned by a faceted dome culminating in an iron cross with a small pennant. It is interesting to note that, although the pelourinho seen today is a reconstitution made in 1935, the original octagonal column was preserved and integrated, maintaining an authentic connection to the primitive monument.
