The Sanctuary of Monte do Clamor stands in a serene and distinctive area, precisely known as Monte do Clamor, in the locality of Carvas, municipality of Vila Real. This historical and religious site is situated between the villages of Santa Marta and Carvas, offering a peaceful environment and views that harmoniously blend into the characteristic landscape of inland Trás-os-Montes.
The Sanctuary of Monte do Clamor is a complex comprising three chapels, each with its own particularity. The oldest of them, rectangular in plan, holds a special prominence due to its history. Although its current invocation is Our Lady of Fátima, this chapel initially had Saint Sebastian as its patron saint. Its structure, a small rectangular building with an adjacent wall that does not continue, suggests that, in remote times, this might have been the chancel of a larger medieval church, revealing a deep connection with the origins of faith and architecture in the region.
The name “Monte do Clamor” (Mount of Clamor) holds a striking popular narrative, passed down through generations. It is said that, in bygone times, a severe drought afflicted the region for seven consecutive years. The communities of Carvas and its surroundings, and even from more distant places like Amarante, flocked to this mount to offer their prayers, clamoring for the arrival of rain. Oral tradition recounts that, after a period of intense devotion, a cloud appeared at this location, marking the beginning of the much-awaited rain, a moment that brought great joy and collective relief.
Beyond its historical relevance and religious context, the Sanctuary of Monte do Clamor offers a space of remarkable serenity. Its location allows for a detachment from the fast pace of daily life, inviting introspection and contemplation. It is a place where the tranquility of the natural environment combines with the richness of its heritage, providing an immersive experience in the rural calm and cultural legacy of Trás-os-Montes.
