The Sanctuary of Santa Bárbara is located in the town of Vilar de Maçada, in the municipality of Alijó. Positioned at a high point, this location offers a broad perspective of the surrounding landscape. Indeed, its location on a hill allows for contemplation of a vast expanse of the territory, including the imposing Serra do Marão on the horizon.
The main structure of the sanctuary consists of a larger chapel, complemented by two smaller chapels. In one of these secondary chapels, built in 1940, is the image of Senhor Jesus da Capelinha, a figure of great importance and patron saint of the locality of Vilar de Maçada.
The current sanctuary arises as a reconstruction of an older place of worship, pointing to a tradition of devotion rooted in the region. This historical continuity gives the sanctuary a particular value, testifying to its cultural and religious importance for the community. It is a space that invites contemplation and recognition of local heritage.
Beyond its architectural and devotional value, the sanctuary also serves as a remarkable natural viewpoint. From there, the panoramic view unfolds for several kilometers, embracing a vast area of the Trás-os-Montes landscape. The breadth of the horizon and the natural beauty of the surroundings make this spot a privileged place for observing the region.
