Solar da Rede, also known as Pousada de Mesão Frio, Solar da Rede, is located in the Brunhais de Baixo area, in the town of Mesão Frio. This manor house stands on a hillside, offering a privileged perspective over the majestic Douro River. Its integration into a vast vineyard estate, spanning 27 hectares, highlights the landscape setting of the Douro region.

The History of the Manor

With roots dating back to the 15th century, Solar da Rede underwent a significant reconstruction in the 18th century, driven by José Maria Borges Rebelo de Queirós. This property is a testament to the lineage of the Borges and Cabral families, whose presence is marked by the coat of arms crowning its facade. Subsequently, the manor was inherited by José Maria de Alpoim Cerqueira Borges Cabral, better known as Conselheiro Alpoim, a prominent figure in both the Portuguese monarchy and republic.

Architectural Details

Solar da Rede stands out for its 18th-century architecture, with an extensive building attributed to Nicolau Nasoni. The facade, in the style of Chã architecture, is characterized by white walls and French windows with straight lintels and wooden window frames. Access to the property is through an imposing granite portico, adorned with four winged griffins. In the center of the facade, a granite fountain is visible, while at the eastern end of the building there is a small chapel, dedicated to Saint Sebastian, which preserves a carved altarpiece and period azulejo panels.

The Exterior Environment

In front of the main facade of the manor, a wide forecourt extends, inviting contemplation. From this point, stairs lead to a carefully tended garden, where boxwood and camellia beds stand out. The entire manor is surrounded by the extensive vineyards that make up the property, offering unobstructed views over the characteristic landscape of the Douro Valley, a setting of renowned natural and cultural beauty.
