The Church of Santa Eulália is situated in the peaceful village of Pensalvos, part of the union of parishes of Pensalvos and Parada de Monteiros, in the municipality of Vila Pouca de Aguiar. Its location allows visitors to enjoy a serene environment, characteristic of the region's rural landscapes, where the building stands out as a central point in the local community.
With roots dating back to the medieval period, the Church of Santa Eulália is a testament to the passage of time and different architectural eras. Over the centuries, the building underwent significant transformations, particularly during the 17th and 18th centuries. These renovations gave it a distinctly Baroque identity, visible in its structure, which includes a single nave, a rectangular chancel, and an attached sacristy.
Inside, the Church of Santa Eulália reveals an impressive decorative richness that captivates the gaze of visitors. The altarpieces of gilded carving are one of the highlights, demonstrating the mastery of the artisans of the time. The ceiling is particularly notable, profusely adorned with oil paintings depicting various biblical passages. This pictorial tapestry on the ceiling is a true illustrated book, addressing biblical, Christological, and hagiological themes. Additionally, prominent features include the carved coffers, decorated with figurative scenes, and the presence of a choir loft and a pulpit. On the left side of the portico above the altar, there is a poignant image of “La Pietà”, a sculpture that evokes maternal grief.
Due to its historical and artistic relevance, the Church of Santa Eulália was officially recognized as a Property of Public Interest in 2006. This classification underscores the importance of the site as an integral part of the cultural heritage of the region and the country, inviting a close look at its preservation and legacy.
