The UTAD Botanical Garden is located in the Bairro da Eira area, in the town of Folhadela, municipality of Vila Real. It is integrated into the vast campus of the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro. This location gives it a particular characteristic, being easily accessible within the city's urban perimeter, south of the center.
With an area of around 80 hectares, this garden stands out for its considerable size. It is recognized as one of the largest botanical gardens in Europe, offering a vast territory to explore and discover the plant diversity and the landscape environments that compose it.
The Garden houses an important living collection, with approximately 1000 plant species. One of its main objectives is the conservation of flora, with special attention to native plant species of Portugal, including some that are endangered. It thus serves as a space for botanical safeguarding and flora study.
The design of the Botanical Garden seeks to integrate visitors with the surrounding natural and landscape environment. Exploring it allows one to discover different landscaped areas and forest spaces, through paths that facilitate exploration. This setting provides a tranquil environment, ideal for a relaxing walk or for nature observation, such as the local avifauna, within an urban context.
