The Mother Church of Veiga de Lila is located in the heart of the locality of Veiga de Lila, within the central area that defines the municipality of Valpaços. Its prominent position in the urban core facilitates its discovery by visitors, serving as an important landmark in the village's landscape.
This religious building, also known as the Church of Our Lady of the Snows, was built in the early 18th century. Its construction during this period gives it a deep connection to local history, reflecting the characteristics and dominant artistic trends at the time of its foundation. It is an architectural testament to the passage of time in this community.
The church is an example of the Baroque style, visible in its details and spatial organization. Inside, the space is divided into two naves, notably separated by a full-arch, or plain arch, Roman Arch. At the base of this arch, two side altars are positioned, while the main altar is located at the highest point of the smaller nave, creating a distinct visual and functional hierarchy.
The imposing nature of the church's bell tower is one of its most striking features. It has two bells and is topped by a Latin cross, flanked by small lateral columns, elements that clearly define its affiliation with the Galaico/Transmontano style. Another notable particularity is the orientation of the main facade, which faces South. This direction is an unusual exception, as most religious constructions of this nature are typically oriented towards the east, giving the Mother Church of Veiga de Lila a rare individuality.
