The Church of São Nicolau is located in the heart of the village of Mesão Frio, in the municipality of the same name, in Vila Real. Situated on an elevated churchyard, the church is accessible via a wide frontal staircase, giving it a notable presence in the urban fabric of the locality. Its central position makes it a landmark for visitors to the village.
With roots that, according to tradition, date back to a Romanesque-Gothic temple commissioned by Queen D. Mafalda, wife of D. Afonso Henriques, the Church of São Nicolau is a testament to the passage of time and various styles. Although the primitive building probably dates from the 13th or 14th centuries, its current form reveals a predominance of 17th and 18th-century interventions. A fascinating mix of elements can be observed, from the Baroque architecture of its floor plan to the main façade, already adorned with the Rococo style, visible in its undulating curves and elaborate details.
Upon entering the Church of São Nicolau, the richness of its interior details immediately captivates. The space is magnificently decorated with altarpieces in gilded and polychrome carving, some of which incorporate older structures, dating from the 16th century. The nave ceiling, in coffers, features polychrome panels with representations of saints, while the chancel ceiling displays scenes from the life of Christ. The side chapels, some with elaborate vaults and altarpieces decorated with motifs of grape bunches, vine leaves, and cherubs, complement this artistic setting. Notable are the altarpiece of the "Descent from the Cross," a work by Simão Antunes, and the sacristy paintings, attributed to the painter Manuel Arnao.
Outside the church, next to the churchyard and under a porch, a set of seven medieval stone trapezoidal sarcophagi offers a glimpse into local funerary history, being an element of great historical interest. Some of these tombs reveal cavities with anthropomorphic outlines and sculpted decorations. On the side wall of the chancel, it is also possible to find Gothic arcosolia that preserve traces of frescoes with figurative painting, elements that invite closer and silent observation.
