The Demarcation Markers of the Douro's Generous Wine Production Zone are dispersed across the characteristic landscape of the parishes of Galafura and Covelinhas, in the municipality of Peso da Régua. They are set in a predominantly rural environment, integrated into the wine estates that shape the region's slopes. Their presence complements the natural and scenic beauty of the Douro valley, offering perspectives that connect history to the impressive landscape.
These modest granite structures represent a pivotal moment in the history of global wine. In the 18th century, faced with the need to regulate and ensure the quality of Douro wines, the Marquis of Pombal established, in 1756, the General Company of Alto Douro Viticulture. This initiative led to the official demarcation of the region, with the placement of hundreds of markers between 1757 and 1761. The "Pombaline Markers" denote the world's first demarcated and regulated wine region, a pioneering achievement aimed at protecting the authenticity and quality of Port Wine.
The markers are monolithic granite blocks, parallelepiped in shape and of great aesthetic simplicity. Their main face, usually turned towards old roads and property boundaries, displays an engraving with the word "FEITORIA" and the year of their placement, such as "1758" or "1761". These elements, though discreet in the landscape, are tangible testimonies of an era of great importance for Douro viticulture, symbolizing the organization and classification system that allowed Port Wine to achieve its global status and recognition.
