The Rabelo Boat Interpretive Center is located in the village of Ilha, in Lugar da Estação, an integral part of the municipality of Mesão Frio. This space has the unique characteristic of occupying the structure of an old primary school, maintaining its original lines. It is situated in an area that evokes the Douro's riverside past, close to National Road 108, an important connecting route in the region's history.
This center is dedicated to honoring one of the Douro's most emblematic vessels, the rabelo boat, and all the men who connected with the river through it. The space seeks to convey the history of a people, the boatmen, skippers, and sailors who mastered the complex art of transporting wine produced in the Alto Douro to Vila Nova de Gaia. Throughout the exhibition, it is possible to understand the bravery and importance of these individuals in the economy and culture of the Douro region.
Inside the center, visitors have the opportunity to explore the anatomy and operation of the rabelo boat. A representation of the rabelo is displayed on the wall, with descriptions of its various components. Crucial parts of the vessel, such as the sail, the espadela, a long, robust oar that served as a rudder, and the sirga, the system of ropes used to pull boats in stretches where wind was scarce or the current strong, are recreated and exhibited. The exhibition is complemented with Port wine barrels, various tools that the sailors used on board, such as a horn that announced the arrival of the boats, and also the image of Our Lady of Good Voyage, protector of navigators.
In addition to the rabelos, the center also interprets the role of the old ferry boats. These vessels were essential for transporting people, goods, and animals between the banks of the Douro River, at a time when bridges were scarce. Through photographs and replicas of a rabelo and a ferry boat, the space illustrates the different forms of navigation and the dynamics of riverside life that characterized the region for many centuries, before modernization and the construction of dams and bridges.
