The São João Chapel is located in Penalonga, a small and tranquil urbanization belonging to the locality of Canedo, in the municipality of Ribeira de Pena. Set in an environment that invites calm, the chapel offers a point of interest that complements the local landscape, away from the hustle and bustle, where one can enjoy a moment of quietude.
This chapel, built in the 18th century, is a testament to the popular religious architecture of the region. It is distinguished by its single nave, a continuous and welcoming interior space, whose ceiling is wood-paneled, contributing to an atmosphere of introspection. Natural light is subtly provided by a side slit, and the ensemble is enhanced by a simple porch that precedes the main entrance.
Inside the São João Chapel, the eye is naturally drawn to the high altarpiece. Carved in polychrome wood, it features golden accents that highlight its details, lending it a particular delicacy. With a simple design and a conception of popular style, the altarpiece not only fulfills its liturgical function but also symbolizes local devotion and art, inviting contemplation of its artistic elements.
