The Chapel of São Salvador de Viveiro is located in the village of Viveiro, an area that is part of the union of civil parishes of Vilar and Viveiro, situated within the municipality of Boticas. Located in the heart of the locality, the chapel blends into the tranquil and rural environment of the region, serving as a landmark for visitors to this area of inland Portugal.
This religious building, constructed from robust granite, features a rectangular plan and is oriented in an East-West direction, a common characteristic in constructions of that era. Although its current appearance is the result of expansion works carried out in 1940, vestiges of the primitive bell tower are still visible on the main façade. The arch that once belonged to this tower was transformed to make way for the main entrance door to the temple, showing the adaptation and evolution of its structure over time.
Although known as the Chapel of São Salvador de Viveiro, this place of worship is, in fact, dedicated to Saint Sebastian. Inside, the high altar stands out, centrally positioned at the head of the chapel. This altar is enriched by elaborate gilded carving, which frames and highlights the religious imagery present there. Annually, in January, the chapel hosts a solemn mass in honor of Saint Sebastian, followed by an ancient and significant tradition: the distribution of bread and wine to the community of faithful, a moment that strengthens local bonds and identity.
