The Chapel of Saint Ovidius is located in Reguengo, an area within the locality of Alvão, in the municipality of Vila Pouca de Aguiar. It is situated in a semi-urban environment, isolated and adapted to the natural slope of the terrain, set within a walled churchyard with a gate, which gives it a serene and inviting setting. Its privileged position allows one to contemplate the surroundings, providing a sense of contemplation and peace.
This chapel is an example of 17th-century religious architecture, exhibiting characteristics of the Mannerist style. Its construction has a simple rectangular plan, with a traditional gabled roof. The facades are predominantly made of exposed stone masonry, which gives the building a robust and authentic appearance. The cornerstones are enriched with Tuscan pilasters, topped by pyramidal pinnacles, adding a sober elegance to the ensemble. The main facade, facing west, stands out with its straight lintel portal, above which a triangular pediment rises. Laterally, lower windows open, providing visual harmony.
The Chapel of Saint Ovidius likely has its roots in the 17th century, serving as a historical landmark of faith in the region. Its existence is confirmed in documentary records from 1758, which already mentioned the local devotion to Saint Ovidius. This saint is traditionally invoked for issues related to auditory health, which reflects a symbolic particularity and a strong devotional connection for the community. The chapel has maintained its original religious function since its foundation, continuing to be an active place of worship throughout the centuries.
Upon crossing the portal, visitors are welcomed into a singular and uncluttered interior space, which encourages tranquility and introspection. The walls, plastered and painted white, in contrast with the ceramic flooring, create a bright and welcoming atmosphere. The stucco ceiling, with its curved form, contributes to the serene atmosphere of the place. Inside, an exposed stone altar, accessible by several steps, constitutes the central point of the chapel, flanked by continuous stone benches that complement the sobriety of the space. These elements, through their simplicity and authenticity, reveal the religious essence and history of this small temple.
