Situated in the tranquility of the Várzea area, in the locality of Passos, municipality of Peso da Régua, the Chapel of Saint Anthony (Capela de Santo António) is nestled in a rural and isolated setting, integrated into the stunning landscape of the Alto Douro Wine Region. This location, classified as a World Heritage site, is known for its winding slopes and viticulture. The chapel stands on one of the hills dominating the city of Régua and the Douro River, offering visitors a natural viewpoint with expansive views over this exceptional region.
Access to the chapel is via an elevated churchyard, adapted to the terrain's slope. This space, paved with the region's typical schist, invites visitors to pause and offers steps for main access. In the churchyard, facing the road, there is a commemorative monument and a simple lean-to, built with the same materials as the chapel, traditionally used for burning candles, testifying to the continuity of the site's devotional use.
The Chapel of Saint Anthony in Passos boasts a history dating back to the 17th century, with its construction dated to 1645. It was built by Manuel Rodrigues Homem, an important figure of the era, whose name and the year of the work are engraved on a cartouche visible above one of the chapel's side openings. This detail offers a direct link to its origins and the patron who made it possible.
Since its foundation, the chapel has played a significant role in the community's religious life. 18th-century documents, such as the Parochial Memoirs of 1758, already referred to its importance as a center of devotion and pilgrimage, attracting faithful from Passos and neighboring localities, especially on the day dedicated to its patron saint. Over the centuries, the building underwent several interventions and reforms, particularly in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, which modified elements such as the main portal, but maintained its essence and devotional function.
The architecture of the Chapel of Saint Anthony exhibits a fusion of religious and vernacular elements, with a touch of Mannerism, reflecting the aesthetic of the 17th century. The building has a simple longitudinal plan, characterized by a homogeneous mass and covered by a gable roof. Its facades, plastered and painted white, contrast with a dark stone masonry base, highlighting its structure.
The main facade, ending in a gable, is crowned by a Latin cross made of stonework. Notable features include the straight lintel portal and, above it, a segmental arch window, which, along with a polylobed oculus, allows light into the interior. The gable corners are adorned with decorative elements that evoke a flame-like style, adding a touch of rural elegance. Inside, the white walls and simple ceiling complement the atmosphere, where a Mannerist altarpiece with a straight plan and three axes stands, serving as the central element of its artistic and religious expression.
