Location

The Cidadelha Chapel, also known as the Chapel of the Lord of the Afflicted, is located in the heart of Cidadelha de Aguiar, part of the municipality of Vila Pouca de Aguiar. It is strategically positioned next to the bridge crossing the Avelames River, on the right bank, integrated into a square that serves as a confluence point for various streets in the village. Its presence marks a central reference point in the urban fabric of this picturesque village.

Architecture and Devotion

This chapel, built in the mid-20th century, features a simple quadrangular plan and a harmonious hipped roof, topped by a circular pinnacle. Its facades are built of irregularly coursed granite stonework, with the joints plastered and painted white, giving it a robust and traditional appearance. The main facade is distinguished by its pilastered quoining and a molded straight lintel portal, which is topped by a Latin cross in stonework and flanked by two metallic lanterns. Its dedication to the Lord of the Afflicted evokes a strong sense of faith and protection, rooted in the local community.

The Interior and the Calvary

Upon entering the chapel, one discovers an interior with plastered and white-painted walls, creating an atmosphere of serenity. The floor is ceramic-tiled, and the flat ceiling reveals itself as the most surprising element: a detailed painting of the Calvary. This artistic representation depicts Christ on the cross, flanked by Saint John and the Virgin, surrounded by shell-like elements. The ceiling paintings are characteristic of the Casa Maranus style, adding particular cultural and artistic value to this place of worship. On the chancel wall, there is an altar table and an image of Christ on the Cross, with his feet superimposed and hands in a blessing position.

Local Heritage

Recognized as a Property of Municipal Interest, a status attributed by the Municipal Assembly of Vila Pouca de Aguiar in 2004, the Cidadelha Chapel represents an element of historical and cultural relevance for the region. Its classification underscores the chapel's importance in preserving local heritage, inviting visitors to appreciate the simplicity of its exterior architecture and the richness of its interior artistic expression.
