Location

The Pillory of Alfarela de Jales stands in a small and welcoming square, an isolated space in the heart of the village of Alfarela de Jales, in the municipality of Vila Pouca de Aguiar. This square, paved with cobblestones, is located parallel to the EN 212, a road that crosses the village.

Its position offers a wide and unobstructed view of the surrounding landscape, allowing one to appreciate the tranquility and natural beauty of the region. The environment is inviting for a stop to observe the structure and the panorama that surrounds it.

Historical Significance

Dating back to the 16th century, the Pillory of Alfarela de Jales constitutes a landmark with a deep connection to the administrative and judicial history of the region. Its construction is strongly associated with the granting of a new charter by D. Manuel I, on August 9, 1514.

This structure symbolized royal power and jurisdiction over the locality, initially serving as the center of justice administration and a place for the execution of sentences. Today, it plays a role as an element of cultural and recreational value, inviting reflection on the territory's past.

Architectural Details

Built entirely of granite stonework, the Pillory of Alfarela de Jales displays a classic typology, known as a "pinecone pillory". Its base is composed of a quadrangular plinth, from which four stepped degrees rise, providing the necessary elevation for the main structure.

At the top, a parallelepiped plinth rests, upon which a monolithic anchor of smooth shaft and Tuscan capital stands. At the top, on a quadrangular slab, the national coat of arms of classic format stands out, adorned by an open crown, characteristic of Portuguese heraldry used until the reign of D. Sebastião. The ensemble is crowned by a central fusiform finial, which lends elegance to the monument.

Classified Heritage

The historical and architectural importance of the Pillory of Alfarela de Jales is officially recognized. Since 1933, the structure has been classified as a Property of Public Interest. This classification underlines its value as an integral part of Portuguese heritage and guarantees its safeguarding.

A detail from its recent history reveals that, in February 1935, the pillory was moved three meters to the south. This alteration, although not authorized at the time by the competent authorities, was carried out to make way for a public fountain and tank, evidencing the adaptation and continuous life of this landmark within the context of the village.
