The Quintela Tower stands in the locality of Vila Marim, in the municipality of Vila Real, located in the Varelas area. Its dominant position is set upon a rocky outcrop at the foot of the Serra do Alvão. This setting offers a panoramic view of the surrounding rural landscape, punctuated by the Marinheira Stream, a tributary of the Cabril River, creating a tranquil environment of great natural beauty.
Classified as a National Monument since 1910, the Quintela Tower is a remarkable example of medieval architecture. Its construction dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries and, according to tradition, was built by order of D. Alda Vasques to serve as a seigneurial residence. Throughout its long history, the tower has been the stage for important changes in ownership, becoming part of public heritage and witnessing centuries of experiences and transformations in the region.
The Quintela Tower features a striking structure in the Gothic style, with a quadrangular plan and impressive dimensions, reaching a height of about 21 meters. Its robust facades, built of exposed stonework, are adorned with distinctive elements that recall its original defensive function. At mid-height and at the upper corners, one can observe crenellated balconies with machicolations, contributing to its imposing silhouette. Access to the interior, which is spread over several floors, is through an elevated portal with a pointed arch (ogival), now accessible via a modern granite staircase, inviting exploration of its spaces.
Beyond its architectural grandeur and historical value, the Quintela Tower holds a prominent place in the region's cultural imagination. Its unique presence inspired the celebrated writer Camilo Castelo Branco, who featured it as one of the settings in his novel "O Anátema". Currently, the tower is recognized as a significant historical and cultural landmark and has been the subject of restoration work aimed at enhancing its heritage and preparing it to eventually house a museum space dedicated to local history.
