The Mondim de Basto Municipal Museum is located in the village of Pousadouro, part of the Recta da Pena Urbanization, in the municipality of Mondim de Basto. It occupies a space that historically belonged to the former Casa da Igreja (House of the Church) property. Its location, near the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade and the Municipal Library, provides a setting that combines urbanization with the surrounding natural landscape, next to a communal land hill.
The fundamental purpose of this museum is to preserve the memory and heritage of Mondim de Basto. It offers a comprehensive perspective on local history and culture, illustrating the evolution of the territory and its communities over time. Through the artifacts it collects, one can observe the tangible and intangible testimonies of the region's life, from ancient times to the present day, with a focus on the conservation and dissemination of the municipality's culture.
The museum occupies historically significant premises, which once formed the Mill Museum Nucleus of Casa da Igreja. The buildings comprising it were constructed in the 20th century for agricultural purposes, notably an old olive oil mill, whose machinery is still visible, and other spaces dedicated to wine production and distillation. Inside, the permanent collections explore themes such as the region's geology, highlighting the characteristics of the Alvão and Marão mountain ranges, archeology, revealing artifacts from the Castro do Crastoeiro (Crastoeiro Hillfort), and ethnography. This latter section illustrates rural life and local traditions, including the olive oil and wine production cycle, and elements of popular culture such as folk dance groups and traditional bass drums, as well as the tradition of the Pilgrims of São Tiago (St. James).
