The Hospital da Misericórdia de Mesão Frio is located in the village of Mesão Frio, integrated into the Bairro Doutor Sá Carneiro. The building is situated on Avenida Dr. Domingos Monteiro, near the churchyard of S. Nicolau Church. Its central location allows for easy integration into the urban environment of the locality, being a notable presence in the historic heart of Mesão Frio.
The building we know today as the Hospital da Misericórdia de Mesão Frio is part of the history of the local Santa Casa da Misericórdia, an institution with roots in the year 1560, when it was founded by André da Fonseca. Throughout the centuries, the Misericórdia played a vital role in assisting the community, with a highlight on the contribution of benefactors such as António de Azeredo e Vasconcelos, whose donations were essential for the development of the institution and its heritage. The site reflects Mesão Frio's long tradition of charity and social support.
This imposing building stands out for its civil architecture, which reveals influences of the late-Baroque style. Classified as a Property of Public Interest, its heritage importance is recognized. The main facade, with its two floors, is richly adorned. One can observe the pilasters at the corners, topped by elegant flame ornaments, and a false reverse-curved pediment at the center. On it, a coat of arms with the arms of Portugal, flanked by shell motifs, is the most prominent element. The entrance portal, with its cut lintel and frame, connects above to a balcony window of similar profile, bearing the inscription "HOSPITAL DA MISERICORDIA". The side windows, with their aprons and decorative ornaments, contribute to the elegance of the ensemble. Inside, the atrium and the noble staircase deserve close attention for their design. The rear part of the building features an arcade of three arches, which on the upper floor forms a balcony, bearing witness to the different construction phases of the site.
