The Cathedral of Vila Real, also known as the Church of São Domingos, is located in the heart of Vila Real city, on Avenida Carvalho Araújo. Its central location allows it to be easily integrated into a stroll through the urban area, offering a striking presence and an accessible point of interest within the city environment.
The history of this remarkable building dates back to the year 1424, when a convent of the Order of Saint Dominic was founded. The church we admire today began to be erected throughout the 15th century. Its function changed significantly in 1922, with the creation of the Diocese of Vila Real, at which time the old conventual temple was adapted to become the city's Cathedral. This dual identity reflects a long and adaptive journey, shaped by centuries of history and different purposes.
The building features predominantly Gothic architecture, characteristic of the 15th century, visible in its sober design. The main portal, with its pointed arch and archivolts, surmounted by an oculus, is a clear example of this constructive phase. Inside, the church has three staggered naves, a transept, and a rectangular chancel. In the 18th century, the temple underwent significant renovations, notably the replacement of the primitive chancel and the construction of the bell tower, dating from 1742, elements that add layers to its original physiognomy.
Classified as a National Monument, the Vila Real Cathedral is one of the most significant examples of Gothic architecture in Trás-os-Montes. Inside, one can admire a Mannerist altarpiece, a piece of art transferred from the Convent of Odivelas during restoration works. More recently, the building was enriched with a set of stained-glass windows by the painter João Vieira. These contemporary works, inspired by the prologue of the Gospel According to Saint John, establish a unique dialogue with the church's medieval structure, highlighting its capacity to accommodate different artistic expressions over time.
