Casa do Fundo de Vila stands in Largo da Praça, the heart of the village of Provesende, in Sabrosa. This small, cobblestone-paved square is located next to the old pillory, lending the space a historic and tranquil atmosphere.
Surrounded by traditional granite houses with whitewashed walls, the area offers an authentic glimpse into life in the Douro region. With little traffic, it is ideal for those who wish to absorb the rural atmosphere and the landscape of terraced vineyards that surround the village.
Built between 1839 and 1841, the house has a sober façade with two floors and regular openings framed by granite surrounds. The ground-floor windows still feature hand-carved sills, while the flooring of the upper-floor balconies rests on sturdy wooden beams.
The gabled roof, covered with traditional regional ceramic tiles, complements the building's harmony. Inside, the coffered ceiling and the central fireplace reveal the domestic character of the 19th century, with the original materials kept in a good state of preservation.
Commissioned by D. Pulquéria Efigénia Leite Pereira de Carvalho Machado, Casa do Fundo de Vila replaced a previous building, taking on the role of a noble residence in Provesende. It was the setting for family events related to local winemaking, adapting over the generations without losing its identity.
