The Church of Possacos stands in the tranquility of the village of the same name, a corner of the locality of Valpaços. Located on the southeastern edge of the settlement, the church is isolated in a spacious paved churchyard, enclosed by a stone wall that invites a serene stroll. This outdoor space is punctuated by olive trees, which provide a calm environment framed by the Trasmontana nature, an invitation to contemplation.
Dating from the 17th and/or 18th centuries, the current Church of Possacos stands on the site of a primitive medieval construction, a visible link to the region's more distant past. This religious building presents a harmonious fusion of styles, displaying architectural characteristics of the Seventeenth-century and Baroque periods. The main façade, facing west, stands out with its truncated gable, crowned by a double bell-tower. In the center, the straight lintel portal, flanked by pilasters, culminates in a broken pediment housing a niche with the image of the patron saint, Our Lady of the Snows. Decorative stone elements, with vegetal and geometric motifs, further enrich the exterior.
Upon crossing the portal, visitors are welcomed by an interior of remarkable beauty and detail. The nave walls, in exposed granite masonry, are highlighted by a dado of bichrome tiles, in shades of blue and white, which give a distinct pattern to the space. The nave's ceiling, in a false barrel vault, is adorned with painted coffers depicting polychrome phytomorphic elements, with the image of Our Lady of the Snows at the center, creating an environment of great visual richness.
The chancel, narrower and lower than the nave, is also lined with bichrome tiles. On its ceiling, carved and painted coffers featuring scenes from the Passion of Christ stand out, a true narrative panel. The main altarpiece, in national-style gilded woodcarving, is a work of great detail, with its twisted columns adorned by angels, birds, and vine leaves. The side altars also deserve attention, one displaying polychrome Rococo-style carving, and the other, characteristics of National Baroque, each contributing to the artistic diversity of the ensemble.
