The Stone Bridge in Adoufe is situated in a predominantly rural environment, isolated at the bottom of the valley where the Corgo River flows. It is located in Coêdo, an area of Adoufe, in the municipality of Vila Real.

Reaching the bridge involves traversing a final stretch of dozens of meters of an old stone-paved road, which winds along the hillside until the crossing is encountered. The surrounding granite landscape is characterized by extensive pine forests and agricultural lands on the riverbanks, lending the place a serene atmosphere connected to nature.

Architecture and Construction

This structure stands out for its vernacular architecture and the robustness of its materials. Built entirely of granite, the bridge features a flat deck, without side railings, extending approximately 21 meters in length and 2.60 meters in width. Its pavement is composed of large stone slabs, rectangular and trapezoidal in shape, resting on nine pillars.

The pillars, built with dry stone masonry and approximately 2.20 meters high, have a notable peculiarity: on the side facing the river's current, they are chiseled into a wedge shape, designed to break the force of the water.

A Historical Legacy

The Stone Bridge likely dates back to the Modern Era. Its exact dating is uncertain due to the simplicity and vernacular character of its construction, which makes precise chronological attribution difficult. The name of its architect or builder is unknown, which reinforces the idea of a work built in a popular manner, to meet the needs of the community over time.

Since its construction, the bridge has served as a link, allowing the crossing of the Corgo River and maintaining its original function as a passage to this day.
