The Cidadelha Bridge is located in the heart of the locality of Cidadelha de Aguiar, within the Seravelha Urbanisation, in the municipality of Vila Pouca de Aguiar. This notable crossing point is situated over the Ribeira de Cidadelha and marks a central element in the village, adjacent to an area that serves as a crossroads for the urban cluster's streets. Its strategic position in the centre of the settlement makes it easy to discover for those exploring the region.
The oldest references to this crossing date back to the mid-18th century, when contemporary documents indicated the absence of a bridge over the Ribeira de Cidadelha in this area. This watercourse, which varied between scarce in summer and abundant in winter, was essential for the operation of local mills, highlighting the need for a crossing structure. The construction of the current Cidadelha Bridge likely took place during the 19th century, establishing itself as a vital infrastructure for communication and transport in the region. Over time, the bridge has undergone several interventions and was officially inaugurated after restoration work in 1997, a testament to its continued importance for the community and local heritage.
The Cidadelha Bridge is a remarkable 19th-century engineering work, characterised by its trestle deck, which rises gently and rests on a single perfect semi-circular arch. The entire structure is built from robust granite stonework, with regular ashlar masonry. Its pavement, although subject to changes over the years, is composed of granite cubes, and the parapets, also in granite stonework, are solid and arranged in two superimposed courses, giving it a solid and traditional appearance. The bridge, classified as a Property of Municipal Interest, maintains its original function to this day, allowing vehicles and pedestrians to cross the river.
