The Misarela Bridge stands in the heart of a deep gorge, in the parish of Ferral, municipality of Montalegre. Suspended over the Rabagão River, its position nestled among the granite cliffs offers an imposing view and reveals the power of nature that shapes the surrounding landscape. This particular location, where the river meanders before meeting the Cávado, is a point of union between the geology and the dense vegetation of the region.
Built in the Middle Ages and later reconstructed in the early 19th century, the Misarela Bridge represents a remarkable example of architecture that harmonized with the natural environment. It is characterized by a single granite arch, with a span of about 13 meters, firmly anchored in the steep rocks. Recognized for its historical and patrimonial value, this structure has been classified as a Public Interest Property since 1958, an acknowledgment of its uniqueness and its lasting presence in the landscape.
The area surrounding the Misarela Bridge is a natural spectacle, characterized by dense vegetation and impressive rock formations, sculpted over time by the force of water. One can observe cascading waterfalls and the so-called "giant's kettles," cylindrical cavities in the rocks created by fluvial erosion. This entire scenery creates an environment of remarkable scenic beauty, where the sound of water and the impressiveness of the rocks invite contemplation.
The Misarela Bridge is deeply rooted in popular imagination, serving as the stage for legends and traditions that have endured for centuries. It is known as the "Devil's Bridge," a designation linked to tales about its mysterious origin, involving a pact with supernatural forces and the cunning of a priest who supposedly outsmarted the Devil, ensuring the structure's permanence. In addition to these narratives, the site was associated with a fertility ritual, where expectant mothers, in a gesture of faith, sought protection for their pregnancies through a symbolic baptism with the river's waters. These stories give the bridge a mystical character and a deep cultural significance for the local community.
