The Garganta Archaeological Center is located in the village of Garganta, belonging to the former parishes of São Martinho de Anta and Paradela de Guiães, in the municipality of Sabrosa. This site is situated in a particular geographical transition zone, where the landscape is shaped between the slopes of the Douro River and the imposing Trás-os-Montes mountain range, offering a unique setting.
This space was created from the rehabilitation of the village's old primary school, with the main objective of preserving and showcasing the valuable archaeological heritage spread throughout the municipality of Sabrosa. It was conceived as a meeting point between the history of human presence in the region and the uniqueness of the surrounding landscape, celebrating the legacy of the past.
At the Garganta Archaeological Center, visitors are invited on a journey through the past, revealing the history of this land. The center presents the rich archaeological heritage of the municipality and the Douro region, highlighting its deep ancient connections. The narrative includes not only the heritage of Romanized Europe, but also the presence of more distant influences from North Africa and the Middle East, emphasizing the historical and cultural importance of the territory.
To enrich the visitor's experience, the Garganta Archaeological Center incorporates elements of modernity and technology. It is possible to explore interactive digital content, animations, and holograms that bring archaeological discoveries to life. The space also features an immersive room and virtual reality glasses, providing an engaging and innovative way to interact with cultural heritage.
