Situated between the localities of Poiares and Canelas, in the municipality of Peso da Régua, in the heart of the Douro region.
It is an ancient Roman site, with remains of a villa and possible defensive structures. The ruins indicate occupation from the 1st century to the 4th or 5th centuries.
The site was first excavated in the 1940s and later subject to further studies and enhancement projects. The findings reveal well-defined structures and elements typical of Roman occupation.
It has been protected as a National Monument since 1959, due to its historical and heritage value.
It is located on high ground with a panoramic view over the Douro valley. The natural surroundings make the site even more special, offering a unique experience connecting with history and nature.
Access is difficult, poorly signposted, and not suitable for all vehicles. In several sections, the route may require walking, making it more suitable for those who enjoy exploring on foot.
It is advisable to plan your visit well and choose to access it from Poiares or Canelas. Avoid GPS-suggested routes from Covelinhas, as they are narrower and more dangerous.
There are no information panels, adequate signage, or nearby parking. The visit can be challenging, but those who reach the destination usually find the experience rewarding.
Those who appreciate history, archaeology, and off-the-beaten-path trails. A small adventure combining heritage and landscape.
