The Quay of Peso da Régua Railway Station is located in Urbanização S. Domingos, in the city of Peso da Régua, right on the right bank of the Douro River. Its position is strategic, at the confluence of the Corgo River with the Douro, situated next to the main road that follows the river. This location places it in the heart of the Baixo Corgo region, an area strongly linked to the production and export of Port Wine.
This quay, an integral part of the Peso da Régua Railway Station, stands as a testament to railway history and the importance of the Douro. Built in the 19th century, it was a pivotal point for the region's development. It was here, on July 14, 1879, that the first train arrived in Régua, marking a new chapter in communications and freight transport. The station was then considered first-class and established itself as a nerve center connecting the provinces of Trás-os-Montes and Beira Alta, consolidating its role in the country's vast railway network. Due to its relevance, the quay has been classified as a Public Interest Property since 2009.
The quay and station complex reveals a functional architecture, yet with distinctive features of the era. The main station building presents a sober design, with its plastered masonry facades, a granite base, and a polychrome tile wainscoting, elements that give it character. One of the most notable points is its large warehouse, entirely built of wood, which extends for approximately 200 meters in a slight arc, closely following the railway line and the street's layout. This warehouse was designed to facilitate the movement of a large volume of goods, especially wine, with multiple doors allowing direct loading of wagons. The complex roof beam structure and its prominent eaves highlight the engineering ingenuity of the railway at the time.
The Quay of Peso da Régua Railway Station offers visitors an atmosphere where the history of the train and the river converge. Walking along its platforms and observing the old buildings allows one to imagine the intense movement of yesteryear, when wine barrels awaited transport and passengers embarked for new destinations. Its riverside location provides a unique perspective of the Douro, framed by the wine-producing landscape that embraces the valley, inviting reflection on the intrinsic link between the train, the river, and the wine economy.
