Situated in the small locality of Salto, in the municipality of Murça, the Chapel of Santo Amaro occupies an elevated point in the village. Its churchyard, or chapel square, offers a tranquil and inviting space, from where one can admire a wide panorama of the village's dwellings and the surrounding mountain ranges. Access to this site is via a staircase, marking a transition that invites observation and tranquility.
The Chapel of Santo Amaro, although its origins likely date back to the 17th or 18th centuries, presents an appearance that results from significant interventions carried out in the mid-20th century. The building is an example of religious architecture with straight and simple lines, characterized by its plastered facades painted in immaculate white. This white contrasts with the granite stonework present in the base, corners, and frames that adorn the openings, lending it a discreet elegance.
The chapel is organized around a main body with a longitudinal plan, to which a square-based bell tower and a rectangular sacristy are attached on the left side facade. The interior of the chapel benefits from abundant natural light, entering through tall and slender windows, as well as circular windows. The tower, slightly set back from the main facade, is distinguished by its three registers marked by white friezes, where the second register features a circular clock and, the third, full-arch openings that house the bells. Elements such as the pyramidal pinnacles on the cornerstones and the Latin cross crowning the main gable complete its structure, highlighting its character and presence in the landscape.
