The Murça Pillory stands in a central area of the village, in the Cortinha Nova neighborhood, playing a prominent role in the main square. This central position offers clear visibility of the monument, inviting a pause for its detailed observation. Its location facilitates access for those walking through the streets of Murça, naturally integrating it into the local urban landscape.
This pillory represents a crucial element in Murça's history, symbolizing its former autonomy and municipal authority. Its construction dates back to the 16th century, a period of great importance for the village, coinciding with the granting of the new royal charter by King Manuel I in 1512. In the past, local justice was administered next to these monuments, serving as a landmark for the community and a visible reminder of the law. It is not Murça's most primitive pillory, but rather a replacement that marks a phase of renewal and consolidation of municipal power.
The Murça Pillory is a remarkable example of Manueline architecture, executed entirely in granite, a material abundant in the region. Its structure rests on an eight-step base, leading to a spiraled shaft, a distinctive feature of the Manueline style. At the top, a capital displays heraldic symbols, including the coat of arms of King Manuel I and the arms of the Guedes family, former lords of Murça. The ensemble is topped by five spiraled pinnacles, which lend a unique elegance to the monument. A visible iron ring on the shaft is also present, a vestige of its former function.
Considered one of the best-preserved pillories in Portugal, the Murça Pillory was classified as a National Monument in 1910. Its excellent state of conservation allows for the appreciation, even today, of the richness of its architectural details and the impressiveness of its presence. It is a point of interest that invites reflection on the history and social life of past communities, keeping alive the memory of a time when this monument was the center of the village's civic life.
