Situated in the locality of Piscais, within the Cabeço area, in the municipality of Vila Real, the Bridge of Piscais stands serenely over the Corgo river. It is located in a predominantly rural environment, characterized by low banks, walled agricultural fields, and some dispersed dwellings. This setting offers a tranquil atmosphere and an authentic visual connection with the natural and agricultural landscape of the region.

A Witness to History

The Bridge of Piscais tells a long story, with its origins dating back to the Roman era. This remarkable structure was part of an important Roman road that crossed the Iberian Peninsula, witnessing centuries of passage and connection. Although its initial construction is Roman, the bridge underwent significant remodelling in the 17th century, during the period of the Spanish Habsburg kings. This intervention adapted it to the needs of the time, but preserved its original essence and robustness.

Architectural Features

Constructed entirely of granite, the Bridge of Piscais is distinguished by its hump-backed profile, characterized by gently sloping ramps. Its structure is composed of four perfect arch spans, of varying dimensions, with the two central ones being visibly larger and more imposing. The quality of the stonework is evident in its well-worked blocks and the wide, regular voussoirs that form the arches, which still reveal their Roman characteristics today. The bridge's robustness is accentuated by the triangular cutwaters downstream and quadrangular cutwaters upstream, which protect the pillars from the floods of the Corgo river, demonstrating durable engineering.

An Enduring Heritage

Recognizing its historical and architectural value, the Bridge of Piscais has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1977. This status underscores its importance in national heritage and ensures its preservation. Currently, the bridge maintains its original function, serving as an active crossing over the Corgo river. Its continuous use attests to the solidity of its construction and its relevance to local life.
