The Monastery of the Benedictine Nuns is located in Murça, in the Bairro da Cortinha Nova, an area integrated into the urban fabric of the village. Its striking presence in the locality attests to its historical importance and how this building remains relevant in Murça's landscape, serving as a landmark within the urban network.
The foundation of this monastery dates back to the year 1587, by initiative of two nuns from the Vairão Convent. Before establishing itself as a Benedictine monastery, the site functioned as an inn, conceived by Simão Guedes. From its very beginning, the space distinguished itself by its vocation for hospitality and aid, welcoming pilgrims and offering support to those most in need in the region.
Over the centuries, the Benedictine nuns expanded their activities beyond purely religious ones. The monastery became a center of community care, treating the sick, providing meals to the most needy, and offering shelter. It also played a crucial role in education, instructing and training girls, functioning as a true school and support house for the population. Its influence extended throughout the municipality of Murça, leaving a profound mark. Among its most celebrated contributions, the art of confectionery stood out, with delicacies such as rosquinhas, cavacórios, queijadinhas, and the famous toucinho do céu, which brought renown to the village and its capacity for hospitality.
The trajectory of the Monastery of the Benedictine Nuns was marked by significant transformations starting in the 19th century. With the political and social changes that occurred then, conventual life gradually disappeared, culminating in the death of the last nun in 1888. After this period, the monastery's heritage passed into the custody of the State. However, its main wing has withstood the test of time and remains in Murça, having served different civic purposes over the years. Currently, after a process of restoration and refurbishment, the building continues to be a living part of the local administration, housing some municipal services and preserving the memory of a past of great relevance to the community.
