Situated in the tranquility of Campo de Baixo, in the locality of Vilar de Viando, municipality of Mondim de Basto, the Vilar de Viando Bridge crosses the clear Cabril River. Its surroundings are markedly rural and picturesque, characterized by extensive fields, vineyards, and the dense riparian vegetation that accompanies the course of the waters. This bucolic setting offers a serene environment, ideal for those seeking close contact with nature and the authenticity of the landscape.
The Vilar de Viando Bridge has roots in the medieval era, witnessing centuries of history and passage. Local tradition indicates that it served as a route for Roman and French armies, and later, for pilgrims on their way to Santiago. Recognized for its cultural and patrimonial importance, it was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1990.
Although the original structure suffered total ruin in 2003, it was carefully reconstructed in the same year. This intervention sought to faithfully reproduce its primitive form, with the support of archaeological studies and the recovery of materials from the riverbed, ensuring that the heritage remained preserved and accessible in its authentic connection to the past.
Built entirely from local granite, the bridge is a remarkable example of traditional engineering. It features a single, imposing perfect arch, over which extends a humpback deck, a distinctive characteristic that gives it an elegant profile. The pavement consists of irregular slabs or granite cobblestones, flanked by robust granite guardrails, which complement its solidity and durability.
The Vilar de Viando Bridge is not just an architectural work; it is also a harmonious element of the landscape. The Cabril River, known for its crystal-clear waters and for being a trout river, flows under the bridge, enriching the natural environment. The beauty of the place, where human intervention meets the surrounding nature, invites a pause to appreciate the serenity and uniqueness of this corner of Mondim de Basto.
