The Pillory of Lordelo stands in the locality of the same name, integrated into the municipality of Vila Real. It is located in Lugar de São Roque, a small urban square that provides the monument with a tranquil setting and proper visibility. Its striking presence in the heart of the village invites a moment of pause and contemplation of its history.
This pillory dates back to the early 16th century, a period of great vitality for many Portuguese settlements. Its construction is associated with the granting of a new charter (foral) by D. Manuel in 1519, a document that granted Lordelo greater administrative and judicial autonomy. At that time, pillories were central landmarks, representing justice and municipal power over the town or locality, serving for the reading of public edicts and as a place for the application of penalties.
Built entirely of granite, this pillory stands out for its robust composition and a style that reflects the simplicity of 16th-century works. Its base consists of three circular steps, upon which the shaft rises. The latter is a single, octagonal section piece that tapers slightly as it ascends. At the top, the finial is crowned by an original set of two superimposed pyramids, giving it a characteristic and rustic silhouette.
The Pillory of Lordelo is recognized for its historical and architectural importance. Since 1933, it has been classified as a Property of Public Interest, a distinction that underscores its value as an integral element of Portuguese cultural heritage. Currently, its function is symbolic, serving as an enduring testament to the history and identity of the locality, a point of reference for visitors to Lordelo.
