The Carreira Garden is integrated into the urban fabric of Vila Real, situated on one of the city's slopes. Its elevated position provides a particular atmosphere, like a green refuge overlooking the eastern surroundings, offering an invitation to pause from the city's rhythm.
Conceived in the late 18th century and completed in the mid-19th century, the Carreira Garden was born from the ambition to create a leisure space for the people of Vila Real. This former public promenade, with a predominantly rectangular layout, reflects the romantic taste of the era. It is characterized by a generous central avenue, flanked by large trees, and secondary paths that create an inviting network for leisurely strolls and quiet contemplation.
While strolling through the Carreira Garden, visitors will encounter a bandstand with sober lines, erected on a stone base and topped by an iron dome. Two fountains complement the scenery: one in the center, with an octagonal design and its water jet, and another, more monumental, at the northern end of the garden. The latter, in a late Baroque style, features a spout and a basin, and is marked by a stone tablet with a Latin inscription. This, when translated, evokes the garden's primary function as a place of tranquility, health, and well-being, highlighting the freshness of its water and the pleasantness provided by its variety of trees.
Botanical diversity is one of this garden's charms, with notable specimens such as lime trees forming a green tunnel, magnolias, araucarias, and camellias, carefully positioned to enhance the beauty of its focal points. Among the foliage, a bronze bust pays homage to the writer Camilo Castelo Branco, a prominent figure in Portuguese literature. The inscriptions on the bust's base include fragments from Miguel Torga's Diário I, establishing a curious literary connection with Camilo's memory and the experience of this garden. Along its retaining walls, various coats of arms can also be found, testaments to other times and buildings from the region that have been preserved here.
