The Keep is located in Chaves, in the heart of the municipality of the same name, standing out in the urban landscape. It rises next to the remnants of the city's ancient medieval wall, marking its presence in an environment that invites discovery of local heritage.
Its central location makes it an unmistakable point of reference, easily identifiable for those exploring the Flaviense borough, allowing for a direct connection with the city's history and architecture.
This imposing tower is what remains of the medieval fortification that once protected Chaves. Its construction dates back to the Gothic period, possibly in the 13th century, a time when D. Afonso III granted a charter to the town, and to whom the development of its defensive and urban project is associated.
Over the centuries, the Keep played a crucial role in the defense of the territory. Chaves, as one of the main Transmontane strongholds, received a significant reinforcement of its military structure, especially during periods of conflict with Castile, underscoring the strategic importance of this bastion for the safeguarding of the country.
Inside the Keep, there is a military museum nucleus, which displays a permanent collection of artifacts related to the history of the Portuguese army. This collection offers a journey through the different eras and conflicts that marked the country's defense, providing insight into military evolution over time.
Visitors can explore exhibits that range from the Reconquista period, with elements alluding to D. João I, through the Peninsular Wars and World War I, to remnants of the Colonial War. The diversity of pieces, which includes replicas of armor, uniforms, weapons, and miniatures, allows for an immersion into Portuguese military history.
