The Interpretive Center of Castro de Palheiros is located in the village of Palheiros, in the municipality of Murça. It is situated in the Terra Quente Transmontana region, in an environment that encompasses the imposing quartzite ridge known as Castro de Palheiros or Fragada do Castro. Its position offers a privileged starting point for understanding the landscape and the millennia-old history of the place.
This center is dedicated to the interpretation and enhancement of Castro de Palheiros, an archaeological site of great relevance. Through internal visit routes and explanatory panels, the space unveils the long history of human occupation that shaped this natural elevation. Visitors can thus understand how populations, from the beginning of the third millennium BC to the present day, left their mark, carving and building in this place.
The Interpretive Center of Castro de Palheiros is the result of a project authored by architect Paulo Gomes. Its design sought to create a building that would serve as a welcoming and understanding point for visitors to the archaeological site. The structure is part of a broader plan to support the archaeological station, which also includes the mapping of routes and external signage, ensuring a cohesive and informative experience about the historical richness of the Castro.
