CEDIEC is located in Sangunhedo, a village in the municipality of Boticas, in the heart of Trás-os-Montes. The surrounding area is characterized by a tranquil rural landscape, with gentle hills and vast green areas, typical of the Barroso region. Its position allows for immersion in a serene and natural environment, which complements the cultural experience offered within.
CEDIEC, an acronym for the European Centre for Documentation and Interpretation of Castro Sculpture, is a cultural facility dedicated to the preservation and study of the rich heritage of the Castro period. This centre offers a detailed perspective on the communities that inhabited the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, allowing visitors direct contact with the art and history of a fundamental period for understanding local origins.
Inside CEDIEC, one of the most striking aspects are the life-sized replicas of the Gallaecian Warriors. These sculptures, representations of warrior figures from the Castro culture, are presented with remarkable accuracy, allowing a close observation of their expressiveness, costumes, and the symbolism associated with these important archaeological findings. The exhibition of these pieces offers a window into the beliefs and social organization of ancient populations.
A visit to CEDIEC invites a journey through time, exploring the historical and cultural roots of Boticas and the surrounding region. It is a place that preserves and reveals the memories of civilizations that shaped the landscape and the cultural heritage of Trás-os-Montes. Through the exhibited pieces and available information, the centre provides an in-depth understanding of the artistic practices and way of life of these ancestral communities.
